A Journey Through The History Of Kangra Fort!

Rishi Raj
A fort that has stood for over 4000 years must have a goldmine of history. And Kangra Fort is exactly that!
When was Kangra Fort built?
Nestled in the Kangra Valley of Himachal Pradesh, it was built in the 4th Century AD by the Katoch dynasty, one of the world’s oldest royal families.
As we said before, historians have found references tracing back to the Mahabharata, where the kingdom of Trigarta (modern-day Kangra) is mentioned.
For centuries, no one could invade the fort until 1009 AD. Then, Mahmud of Ghazni, a Turkish invader, and his forces fought for months and finally broke through. What they found inside was jaw-dropping – one of the richest treasuries in India!
As you can imagine, Mahmud looted it all. This was one of the biggest treasure plunders in history!
Over the years, many rulers tried to claim the fort, but it was in 1620 AD that Emperor Jahangir killed the Katoch king and annexed the Kangra kingdom into the Mughal empire. Since then, the Jahangir Darwaza has stood as a symbol of his triumph.
In 1809 AD, Maharaja Ranjit Singh of the Sikh Empire took control of Kangra Fort, reinforcing its defences. However, after the Anglo-Sikh War, the British annexed it in 1846 and turned it into an administrative post.
And then, in 1905, a disaster struck- one of the deadliest earthquakes in Indian history. It shook the Kangra Valley to its core!
The mighty walls of the fort, which had withstood centuries of war, crumbled in seconds. Towers collapsed, temples shattered, and soon what was once a symbol of strength was left in ruins.
Yet, even in ruins, Kangra Fort remains one of India’s most visited historical sites.

The Architectural Wonders of Kangra Fort!
Now that you’ve learnt about Kangra Fort’s rich history, did you know its architecture is just as fascinating?
Each wall, temple, and gate inside tells a different story- some of war, some of devotion, and some of secrets still awaiting discovery!
Let’s walk you through the grand gateways of Kangra Fort!
Interesting Fact: Kangra Fort doesn’t have just one entrance- it has multiple gateways built by different rulers over centuries.
When you’d visit, the first thing you’d see is the Ranjit Singh Gate. It was built by Maharaja Ranjit Singh when he took control in the 19th century.
Beyond that, the paths lead to the Jahangir Darwaza (as discussed earlier). Our guests have said it’s a must-see, and the thrill of walking through the same entrance the Mughals once stormed is wild!
And then there’s the Andheri Darwaza and Amiri Darwaza, built by the Delhi Sultanate rule.
Do you want to know a cool fact about these gateways?
These were designed for maximum security. Even today, standing under these colossal gates, you can fathom the sheer strength and intelligence that went into building this fortress.
You must’ve read about the dazzling palaces of mirrors in Rajasthan, right?
Well, once upon a time, Kangra Fort had one too, where the Katoch rulers lived, surrounded by luxury and light.
Unfortunately, much of it was destroyed by time, including the 1905 earthquake, but even in ruins, you can imagine the opulence that once existed.
But what hasn’t been ruined are the temples- they have stood the test of time!
A prime favourite amongst our guests are the incredible temples housed within the fortress. The Ambika Devi Temple, dedicated to the patron goddess of the Katoch dynasty, is believed to be one of the oldest surviving temples here. In fact, it is still a place of worship today!
You should also check out the Lakshmi Narayan temple and Jain Temple ruins.
OK, here’s something intriguing and secretive- come closer to the screen!
Kangra Fort is believed to have secret escape tunnels. The Katoch rulers supposedly constructed underground routes to flee in case of an emergency. Although some have collapsed over time, stories of hidden pathways still fascinate tourists and historians!
If you have a camera on you on the tour, here’s a bonus!
At a high altitude, Kangra Fort offers spectacular views of rolling hills, lush greenery, and the stunning Dhauladhar mountain range.
